Protestant Reformers Church, Liverpool

This time last week I was in Liverpool, preaching at Salop Chapel Free Presbyterian Church, Walton.

After the evening service Mr Robbie Riley took me on a tour of some famous churches in Liverpool, including the old Memorial Church of the Protestant Martyrs at Wavertree and the Ancient Chapel of Toxteth – a Puritan preaching house built in 1618 where Richard Mather ministered. (Richard was the father of Increase Mather and grandfather of Cotton Mather, two famous Puritan preachers from Boston, Massachusetts, USA).

Before the tour, Robbie, a keen collector, showed me a copy of a 1966 New Years' booklet from Liverpool Protestant Reformers Church, presented to members of the congregation by Rev. and Mrs. Mason.

The inside page identifies the Motto Text for 1966 as Psalm 46:1: "God is our Refuge and our Strength." It then proceeds to a simplified outline of the church's doctrinal position:

"We believe in the basic principles of the Protestant Reformation that the Holy Scriptures contain all things necessary to Salvation; that Jesus Christ is the one Mediator between God and man; that there is no priest but Christ, and no sacrifice for sin save that of Calvary."

Under this declaration our church would certainly be delighted to minister.

I wonder, in this age of compromise and sell-out, how many evangelical churches would be prepared to rally round this banner?
