The Psalm that Spawned 'A Mighty Fortress is our God'

At the start of 2017 I announced to the congregation at Martyrs that, since this was Reformation anniversary year, I planned to preach through two series of messages:

1. Messages on Psalm 46 – 'A Song That Showcases Our Secure Stronghold.'

Though not Martin Luther's favourite psalm (Psalm 118 claims this accolade), the lines of the 46th Psalm proved hugely inspirational in the Reformer's life and ministry.

2. Messages on The Book of Galatians – 'Rediscovering The Gospel Of Grace.'

Luther had lectured on this epistle of Paul's in 1519 and again in 1523. It was his favourite among all the Biblical books. In his table talks the saying is recorded:

"The Epistle to the Galatians is my epistle. To it I am as it were in wedlock. It is my Katherine."

Much later when a friend of his was preparing an edition of all his Latin works, he remarked to his home circle:

"If I had my way about it they would republish only those of my books which have doctrine. My Galatians, for instance."
