James M. Lawson, chief artist behind Reformed Christian Comic Books, regularly posts his new cartoons on his online blog, complete with explanatory text. He specialises in comics with a serious biblical message, where each accompanying line highlights some scriptures on which each drawing is based.
In this case – Only Sinners / Soli Peccatori – Lawson draws attention to the truth that God saves only sinners (those who imagine that they are good enough for heaven as a result of their own good deeds treat God's salvation as an inferior method and are passed by). He features a number of Bible texts (referenced in the cartoon above).
My personal favourites in this field are:
Luke 5:31-32: "And Jesus answering said unto them, 'They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance'."
1 Timothy 1:15: "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief."
If you could see what I once was, If you could go with me, Back to where I started from, Then I know you would see: A miracle of love that took me in it's sweet embrace, And made me what I am today, Just an old sinner saved by grace. I'm just a sinner saved by grace, When I stood condemned to death, He took my place! Now I live and breathe in freedom with each breath of life I take, Loved and forgiven, Back with the living, I'm just a sinner saved by grace.
James Lawson completes the writing below his cartoon with this evangelistic summons:
"May the LORD bless you as you are caused by Him to see your sinfulness for what it really is – a prerequisite for true salvation! May the LORD now cause you to run to Him in utter despair and throw down your dead works that have tried to please Him in vain!
ONLY His Righteousness Saves! He saves ONLY sinners! Sinners that are caused by Him to hate their sin and love His Righteous Gift, saving you from His righteous wrath."
