SOMME

SERVICE

At our Somme Commemoration Service on Wednesday, 29 June, an address was given by Rev. Ian Brown on the subject, ‘The 36th Ulster Division At The Somme.’ Various artifacts from the Great War era and models that had been specially made for the occasion were on display, including a 1/6 scale model 'Over The Top' by Norman McKane and an eight foot square diorama of 'The Thiepval Sector' in which the 36th Ulster served, built to scale according to 1916 area and trench maps.

To mark the special poignancy this momentous battle has for our congregation, wreaths were laid by various members in honour of loved ones who served at the Somme..

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

John 15:13

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

"The Ulster Division has been too superb for words.  ... I cannot describe to you how I feel about

them.  I did not believe men were made who could do such gallant work under the conditions

of modern war.”  Major-General Nugent, 2 July 1916
