Last night was extremely encouraging at Martyrs with a large number of visitors present for the subject, Faith in the Face of the Firing Squad.

This recounting of the life of Edith Cavell allowed considerable scope for a solid Gospel presentation, ranging across Bible passages from Isaiah 26:1-4 to Revelation 21:1-7.

Edith's involvement with John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress also gave impetus to the emphasis of Christ as the only Saviour of sinners:

Bunyan made it clear to his readers what it meant to be a follower of Jesus. He traced the journeys of Christian and Christiana who had to leave the City of Destruction in order to travel to the Celestial City. Hopeful, Christian’s companion on the journey, says: “One day I was very sad, I think sadder than at any one time in my life, and this sadness was through a fresh sight of the greatness and vileness of my sins. And as I was then looking for nothing but hell, and the everlasting damnation of my soul, suddenly, as I thought, I saw the Lord Jesus Christ look down from heaven upon me, and saying, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.’ (Acts 16:30-31). But I replied, ‘Lord, I am great, a very great sinner.’ And He answered, ‘My grace is sufficient for thee.’ (2 Corinthians 12:9). And I heard Him say, ‘And him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.’ (John 6:37).”

Please continue to pray earnestly that anyone unconverted who heard the message last evening will turn from sin to the Saviour.

Nor silver nor gold hath obtained my redemption; No riches of earth could have saved my poor soul. The blood of the cross is my only foundation; The death of my Saviour now maketh me whole.
