It was especially encouraging to note the good attendance at our Somme Commemoration Service held at Martyrs Memorial Free Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, 29 June.
A march was led to the church by The Sergeant Walker Memorial Pipe Band.
At the meeting an address was given by Rev. Ian Brown on the subject, ‘The 36th Ulster Division At The Somme.’ [ http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=63016144514 ]
Various artifacts from the Great War era and models that had been specially made for the occasion were on display. These included:
• A 1/6 scale representation of 'Going Over The Top' by Norman McKane,
• artifacts supplied by David Browne,
• an encased poppy from The Fields of Blood sculpture owne by Peter Lunn,
• an eight foot square diorama of the sector in which the 36th Ulster served, built to scale according to 1916 area and trench maps.
To mark the special poignancy this momentous battle has for our congregation wreaths were laid by various members in honour of loved ones who served at the Somme.
"We will remember them."
